The Non-Flying Dutchman

I just came across this article in the Financial Times, from April 2006, on Dennis Bergkamp. He was the definitive footballer for me, along with Jürgen Klinsmann, in terms of what I wanted to do on a football pitch — barring his moments of wild anger, of course. Although I only had a few chances to see Klinsmann in action, I feel lucky to have witnessed each of these Bergkamp moments mentioned in the article:

There was his instant flick with back to the goal and then full-circle spin around Nikos Dabizas, of Newcastle United; the loblet that placed Fredrik Ljungberg alone in front of Juventus’s goal; or his outside-of-the-foot strike against Argentina.

For your delight, here is a video (along with some incongruous music) that displays these three moments — the Newcastle goal at 2:04, the Ljungberg assist at 3:26, and the Argentina goal at the end. Here is that last one again, previewed with a goal from Bergkamp’s legendary hat-trick against Leicester City in September 1997 to make the point that it was no fluke.

I think this also sort of explains why I’d sometimes burst into spontaneous laughter or applause while watching football on TV by myself.

Japan!

For a recovering tetris addict and fan of Takeshi’s castle, this is pure gold.

Tere ishq nachayya

I really liked Jawad’s vocal athletics on Meekal Hassan Band’s work; regrettably he no longer sings for them apparently, which is a shame - Jawad doesnt get half of the publicity he deserves i think.

Its also amusing to see the thinly disguised irriation both the singers seem to have for each other. Ironic, considering what they are singing..

watch it and weep

i think bad lyrics can make a song worse. i particularly despise crappy, mush songs superimposed on generic production, complete with soaring strings and the like. i think the unusual production was one of the reasons why i liked umbrella (there, i admitted it :p). (can’t figure out how to get the link in colour - i am a luddite)

on the other hand great or even good lyrics aren’t really necessary for a song to be great. sometimes the quality of a song is improved just by how the voice is used as an instrument. its almost irrelevant what the lyrics are. isn’t this one of the reasons we enjoy music in a foreign language which we don’t understand?

oh and this is absolutely incredible. i need to get this album. soon.

zeitgeist, insight or both?

I’ve never really tried to get into Dylan (although I did love ‘things have changed’ from wonderboys, which was also a very good film.)

However I came across a cover version of ’senor’ by Calexico and Willy Nelson which I really liked and I thought I’d throw this question out there.

Does it really matter if culture is timeless or not? For instance if Bob Dylan doesn’t really have that much relevance for me (although I know Atomsmasher is a big fan), surely it doesn’t diminish the value of his work and the immense contribution it had on the cultural life of America. Similarly, I doubt people will really understand the Simpsons twenty years from now but do we really care? Read the rest of this entry »

silly wabbit.

will he leave nothing unsullied?

although, if he’d stuck to just hugging rabbits, the world would be a better place for it.

koka kola, advertising, & cocaine

i guess the question is this: what do we want jumabazaar to be? it started out as a dedicated space for the on-line conversation we were already having, but now it’s something slightly different, although i think we’re still writing for ourselves, and not for an outside audience. and that’s a good thing - we should be our audience before anyone else.

at the same time, i think one reason we moved to JB is to have some sort of interaction with other people via comments, etc. so, we need to put links out there and hope that some of the people who follow those links share our interests. so, it would be nice to have more active readers, but it won’t kill JB if we don’t have more.

as for overload, i actually liked the two videos i’ve seen of them with pappu saeen and jhoora saeen - ‘cursed’ [from my last post] and ‘dhamaal‘. i think, for me, the absence of vocals is a plus. and i haven’t heard anything else about overload - are they still around?
